Chong Ro Tailor was opened near Jonggak in 1916 by founder Lee Doo-yong after learning a tailoring technique from Japan. It was moved to Pimatgol in 1940 and has been in business until now. I heard that major figures in legal circles or academe including Vice President Yi Si-yeong used to be regular customers of this store. Even now, this store is as competitive as ready-made suits, and customers are coming from all over Korea. This store has been running for the past 100 years over 4 generations. Although it was moved to Eulji Business Center as a result of the redevelopment of Jongno, it has been preserving the image of Seoul's modern history and society.
Q. Do you have any interesting stories about the name or opening of the store?
A. Since this store was opened in Jonggak, it was named Chong Ro Tailor. It went through a lot until it was moved to Gwanghwamun and then to Euljiro. Kim Du-han, who became more famous via "The Age of Wanderer," and Korea's first Vice President Yi Si-yeong used to be regular customers of this store. One day, a minister visited my store even while on crutches.
